Texas A & M tabbed Samford head coach Bucky McMillan for the same post with aggies on Saturday.
McMillan is a three-o’clock Southern Conference Coach of the Year (2022-24) and replaces Buzz Williams at College Station. Williams accepted the head training job with Maryland on Tuesday, two days after former Terrapin’s head coach Kevin Willard was appointed the same position in Villanova.
“I couldn’t be more excited to wake up to reality to be the main basketball coach at Texas A&M,” McMillan said. “As a guy who grew up around Sec, I am motivated by the vision of Texas A & M’s leadership to compete at the highest levels in college basketball. When I have done my entire career, I will not rest until we get aggies playing at a championship level year in and year.”
McMillan, 41, published a record of 99-52 during his five seasons with Bulldogs, including an NCAA tournament in 2024 when Samford won a school record 29 matches. He also won two regular seasonal championships and a tournament title with Samford.
This season, Bulldog’s 22-11 went and played in rivet before being eliminated in the first round of George Mason.
McMillan received Raved as Samford for its fast offensive system and press-paced defensive schedules called “Bucky Ball.”
“We are extremely pleased that Bucky is coming to Agggieland to lead our men’s basketball program,” said Texas A & M Athletic Director Trev Alberts. “He is an innovator as a coach, and he has a smart and analysis -driven attitude to the game. Bucky gives a unique combination of qualities for our program and we are pleased to start the next chapter in our basketball history under his leadership.”
Williams, 52, guided Texas A&M to three consecutive NCAA tournaments during his six seasons at the helm. The Aggies ended with a 23-11 record this season after losing a decision of 91-79 to Michigan in the second round on March 22.
