Utah rally to beat canucks for boost in playoff chase

Logan Cooley’s goal 5:08 into the third period broke the tie and Utah Hockey Club came from behind to defeat the host Vancouver Canucks 3-1 on Sunday evening.

Kevin Stenlund and Clayton Keller also scored for Utah, who had lost four of the last six and struggles to remain in the playoffs. Vancouver and St. Louis Blues is bound on points for the final Western Conference Wild card site, and Utah moved to two points back.

Nick Schmaltz had two assists and Karel Vejmelka stopped 18 shots for Utah.

Defender Quinn Hughes gave the goal of Canucks, who had won their last two. Kevin Lankinen made 20 rescues.

Cooley put in a recovery from the lower part of the right circle for the game winner. Keller added an empty net destination with 31 seconds left, his 24th goal of the year.

Utah Hockey Club killed a four -minute Vancouver Power Play in the middle of the third.

The game was tied 1-1 after 40 minutes.

Hughes Power-Play goal 2:37 into the second period gave Vancouver a 1-0 lead. His wrist shot from the left point was diverted in the hand by Utah defender Mikhail Sergachev.

Stenlund tied it with 7:56 in the middle period. He one-tide a shot from the bottom of the right circle outside a cover cutting card from Nick Bjugstad.

Canucks had only 10 shots through the first two periods.

An obvious goal from Utah Hockey Club’s Dylan Guenther 1:26 into the second period was immediately waved due to goal disorders by teammate Michael Carcone. There was no punishment.

Utah surpassed Vancouver 10-4 during the first period. Lankinen was forced to make a great rescue on a tip attempt near Guenther in the first minute of the game.

Utah forward Liam O’Brien missed the first game in what is expected to be a long absence due to a lower bodily injury affected against the Seattle Kraken on Friday. O’Brien is likely to be out for the regular season.

Canucks forward Filip Chytil did not play because of a concussion on Saturday night against the Chicago Blackhawks.
