Top-seeded Jessica Pegula needed only 58 minutes on Friday to publish a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Russia’s Anna Blinkova to reach the semi-final in the ATOpen in Austin, Texas.
Pegula won 76.9 percent of their first serving points and converted 5 out of 7 break points while crossing the victory. She is in her second semi -final of the season, the other comes to Adelaide where she eventually lost to Madison Keys in the final in January.
Pegula meets the next Australian Wild Card Ajla Tomljanovic, which surpassed the Japanese qualifier one Shibahara 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (8) in its quarter final match. Tomljanovic saved a match point in the third set of tiebreaker while winning four of the last five points.
In other Friday quarters finals, fifth-seeded McCartney Kessler will meet Romania’s Sorana Cirtea and American Caroline Dolehide will meet Belgium’s greeting memories.
Merida Open Akron
Elina Avanesyan from Armenia converted 9 of 14 break points while collecting for a 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 victory over the Australian qualifier Maya Joint in Merida, Mexico.
Avanesyan dominated the third set by winning 30 of the 44 total points. She will meet the winner of the quarter final between top seeds Emma Navarro and Turkey’s Zeynep Sonmez, planned for later Friday.
On Friday’s docket is the quarter final between Slovakia’s Rebecca Sramkova and Colombia’s Emiliana Arango, and another involving second seeds Paula Badosa in Spain against the qualifying Daria Saville in Australia.
