New York Yankees star Giancarlo Stanton has to do with chronic tendinitis in both elbows and is unsure of being ready for the opening day, confirmed manager Aaron Boone Sunday.
MVP in 2024 American League Championship series was disturbed by deep tenderness in the elbows during much of last season. The 35-year-old met 27 home and drove in 72 runs over 114 games.
“It’s hard to say,” Boone said in terms of when Stanton can make his season debut. “I won’t put any timeline on it. We’ll just be smart with it.”
Position player reported to Tampa, Florida, Sunday, one day before the team’s first training in Full Squad. New York opens the regular season on March 27 against the visiting Milwaukee Brewers.
Boone knew that Stanton continued to be bothered by the elbow’s discomfort during the winter, so Sunday’s news was not surprising to the Yankees manager.
“Giancarlo is a bit behind just handling some elbow articles that he handled last year, actually both elbows that really resemble the tennis elbow,” Boone said of the club’s main designated hits. “This is something that if we are full drilling in we would probably grind away, but just want to make sure that we give it the right time and just give us the chance to be in the best position during the year.”
Yankees would like a healthy Stanton this season when they look to compensate for the lost production of Juan Soto, who went to the New York Mets as a free agent during the season.
Stanton had seven homers and 16 RBI in 55 after -year periods when Yankees reached the World Series before losing to Los Angeles Dodgers in five matches. Stanton went deep twice in the autumn classic to follow up his four-home show against Cleveland Guardians in Alcs.
Stanton enters his 16th big league season – the first eight to come with Miami Marlins before he was traded to Yankees before the 2018 season.
Stanton is a five times All-Star and he was the National League MVP 2017 when he established career heights of 59 Homers and 132 RBI for Miami.
Center Fielfra Trent Grisham also recovers from a new left hamstring. He beat .190 with nine homers and 31 RBI in 76 games last season.
