Trent Grisham delivered a driving single at the top of the second round, and four jugs combined on a three-hit shutdown when the visiting New York Yankees beat Tampa Bay Ray’s 1-0 on Friday.
Carlos Rodon (2-3) allowed two hits with four walks and nine strikes over six rounds. Mark Leiter Jr. And Fernando Cruz each hit an inning before Luke Weaver retired in Rays in order in the ninth for his second rescue.
Paul Goldschmidt had three of Yankee’s five hits for his 10th multi-hit game. New York has won five straight matches and seven of the last nine.
Tampa Bay lost his fourth straight match despite a strong excursion from starting Kannan Drew Rasmussen (1-1), who gave up a run of three hits over a season’s high 5 2/3 rounds. He went three and knocked out seven.
Rodon began his excursion with a lead in the first round. Junior Caminero accompanied a single before Rodon found the next three beats.
New York pushed a run in the second round against Rasmussen after Goldschmidt hit a lead single.
Goldschmidt moved to others on JC Escarra’s one-out walk and Anthony Volpe turned out before Grisham delivered a driving point single.
Escarra started at Catcher instead of Austin Wells, which was removed from the starting lineup due to food poisoning.
The game contained a couple of important defensive gigs in the late round.
Mark Leiter Jr. Replaced Rodon in the seventh round and greeted by a rocket to the right field by leader Jonathan Aranda, which was tagged out and tried to reach the third base of a perfect relay.
The Raysna responded with a star defensive game in the eighth round when midfielder Jose Caballero robbed Ben Rice by a two-run Homer with a catch over the wall.
The Raysna has opened the four-game series at Yankees’ Spring Training Home of George M. Steinbrenner Field by leaving a total of 15 runners on the base.
